Why Do Bees Sometimes Look Like They’ve Drowned in Feeders?
It can be concerning to see bees in a feeder and assume they’ve drowned, but in most cases, that’s not what’s happening. Honey bees naturally experience daily loss as part of their life cycle. Worker bees only live a few weeks during the active season, and some will die inside the hive each day. Under normal conditions, “undertaker” or mortuary bees remove these dead bees and carry them out of the hive to keep the colony clean. When you’re using an in-hive feeder or open feeding system, those natural processes can become more visible: Some bees that have died naturally may end up in the feeder area Mortuary bees may not be able to easily access or remove them from the liquid This can make it appear like bees have drowned, even though they died from natural causes In a healthy colony, a small number of dead bees is completely normal and expected. Feeders are not typically the cause of widespread bee loss when used properly.
